Day, Denise. Personal Interview. 18 February 2018. Throughout my interview with Denise Day, I learned a great amount of information about
the philanthropy I’ve recently become a part of, Place of Hope. Place of Hope is a community that rescues neglected and abused children from their troubled past lives and helps then get a new start for their future. I learned that the backbone of this charity is not the people in charge, but rather the volunteers by offering their time for a good cause. Denise helped me grasp that the purpose of Place of Hope is not to raise more money than the next charity but to make sure that the children who are admitted into the program, come out as successful adults who can contribute to society. She also explained to me different ways that someone can become involved and participate within Place of Hope.
"A Critical Look at Philanthropic Giving." ASHE Higher Education Report 37.2 (2011): 79-84. Web.
In this article, it primarily focused on the common critiques of philanthropies and how it tends to impact parts of higher education. The article addresses the fact that philanthropy tends to bring great opportunity and opens doors for a prosperous community. One of the main criticisms of philanthropy was that it goes against the free market. Typically, in a market economy, inequalities are fixed by natural adjustment of the market, but philanthropies interfere with this process by adjusting the economy artificially. Another argument brought up was that a philanthropy’s cause may be self-motivated and therefore not as meaningful. Many are involved with organizations because of the benefits the might get out of it, not for those who actually need the care. The authors acknowledge the benefits of philanthropies but point out the negatives that are often overlooked by society.
“Objectives.” Place of Hope, Inc., Community Foundation For Palm Beach and Martin Counties, account.yourcommunityfoundation.org/catalog/org.shtml?org_id=13093.
This website completely focuses on the actual foundation of Place of Hope. This will
contribute in a very large way to project two because it gives direct, accurate information about the background and objectives of Place of Hope. The mission of Place of Hope is to offer family- style foster care to provide nurturing environments for the children to prosper. Place of Hope launched in 1998 because of a mission trip to Russia where those involved witnessed Russian orphans living in terrible conditions, desperate to look for a home. By providing safe communities for children, Place of Hope has contributed greatly to society. They have received many different recognitions from several accredited organizations. One example in specific was when Huffington Post put Place of Hope as one of the “11 Top-Rated Charities that Changed the World in 2014.” Another aspect of the organization that is discussed is the volunteers. The article shares that over 100 volunteers give their time to Place of Hope. They mainly spend their time helping the children in whatever way they can, but this goes to show how Place of Hope represents a close-knit family.
Soares, Claudia. "Care and Trauma: Exhibiting Histories of Philanthropic Childcare Practices." Journal of Historical Geography 52 (2016): 100-7. Web. This article brings light to different methods of philanthropy helping children who may
have been in the same situation as the children in Place of Hope. It discusses philanthropy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It goes through how these programs helped improve the lives of those participating in them and provided the kids who went through them a different style of care. By highlighting both the positive and negative experiences of childcare for those in need back then, it helps contribute to how today’s society deals with childcare and orphans.
White, Georgina. "The Ethics of Philanthropy." European Legacy 23.1 (2018): 111-26. Web. This essay addresses the questions that have been brought to light recently with modern
philanthropy. Contemporary scholars have been analyzing philanthropic activity and have noticed that there is an increased amount of large-scale giving as well as a reliance on private companies providing basic needs to the underprivileged. The essay brings up the main question of “Who should we donate to?” because the market distributes wealth to those who need it most. This article helps readers determine where they might want to donate their money, so it gets distributed to what they feel is most important.
Khasanzyanova, Albina. "How Volunteering Helps Students to Develop Soft Skills." International Review of Education / Internationale Zeitschrift for Erziehungswissenschaft 63.3 (2017): 363-79. Web. Across the country, many parents and students have recognized that school will not give
you all the skills you will need in the real world. Because of this, many students are either required to volunteer or choose to for their own good. This article shows that volunteering is essential to a child growing up because it teaches them critical personality traits that will benefit them in the future. These activities are proven to help their learning process and make their higher education more enjoyable. This article can be used in the paper because I had the same experiences when I was in high school, so it is relatable.
Bremner, Robert Hamlett. American Philanthropy. University of Chicago Press, 1988. This book suggests that there are mixed emotions in America about philanthropy. Some
argue that it is just used to get ahead socially and goes against the democracy that this country was laid on. Philanthropy’s purpose is to improve the quality of human life and despite the motives of those who donate, it will always be a part of American culture. This book is helpful because it shows the positives and possible negatives of philanthropy as well as how it relates to American culture.
O'Neill, Tom. A Place Called Hope: Caring for Children in Distress. Blackwell, 1981. Most people can never imagine some of the horror stories that children in abusive
families or foster care go through. In Place of Hope, many of those children have faced more than some adults will in their lifetime. Tom O’Neill writes about his experiences of child care in England and how childcare can be improved. This is beneficial to the paper because it shows how childcare has changed and that Place of Hope uses a lot of the ideas O’Neill mentioned in his writing.
“Angel Moms – Place of Hope.” Place of Hope, www.placeofhoperinker.org/angel-moms/. This page describes what Angel Moms are and their significance to The Place of Hope.
Angel Mom’s serve as Ambassadors in the community and create awareness for the program. The Angel Moms help bring new people in to give them the opportunity to take part in this program. They also have the opportunity to be with the children and work alongside them to help them through the process of creating a new life for themselves.
Pelton, L. H. (1978). Child abuse and neglect: The myth of classlessness. American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 48(4), 608-617.
Throughout history, child abuse and neglect have been a very prevalent topic that is constantly being addressed. In this article, Pelton discusses that while commonly thought to be concentrated in just lower-class citizens, child abuse and neglect is actually broadly distributed throughout society. He claims that its frequency and severity are completely unrelated to a family’s economic standing. This will help the paper because it shows how children in Place of Hope come from all different backgrounds.
