I decided to do this blog post on chapter 6 of the Bedford Book of Genres because it relates a lot to our second project and a bulk of our paper. Resources are so important because they help us understand information and prove points for different discussions. One of the interesting points of this chapter was where you are supposed to find resources. As students, we like to go with the easiest route which tends to be Google. We think that just because something may show up as the first link on Google, it is automatically considered valuable and accurate. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Many times, sources on Google will be written by random people who have no background on a certain topic whatsoever. Sometimes, you can get lucky and find a credible source by looking through Google but this is pretty rare. This chapter explained exactly the type of sources we should be looking for when researching. They said that the best resources are typically academic, peer reviewed sources. These types of sources are from an expert’s point of view (meaning they probably have a degree in the subject) and have critiques to their research. There are large databases that contain a large amount of these types of resources (especially here at FSU!) and for our second project, we are encouraged to use them to find credible sources and research.
